Wondering whether that viral image is real? Google’s SynthID Detector — previously limited to media professionals — is now available to everyone worldwide in English at synthid.com.
How it works
- SynthID embeds imperceptible watermarks into AI-generated images, video, and audio at creation time
- The Detector scans a file for those watermarks and tells you whether AI made it — and the concept is deliberately simple
- Coverage today: media from Google, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao; Apple AI tool detection is coming soon
The scale
Since launching in 2023, Google says it has watermarked over 180 billion images and videos and ‘240,000 years of audio content.’ You could already ask Gemini about a specific file, but the standalone Detector site makes the check a one-step process — a timely tool as AI-generated media floods every feed.
